What is Blood β-hCG:
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is hormone that starts to be produced as soon as 10 days after conception. Early in pregnancy, hCG levels rise quickly in healthy pregnancies. A rise in the level can be an indication of pregnancy.
About the Test:
The beta-hCG blood test quantifies the level of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood. This test helps to confirm and assess a pregnancy.
Beta-hCG tests can be performed repeatedly to see whether hCG levels are rising, which indicates that a pregnancy is progressing normally. In addition, the beta-hCG test can be used to assess the success of fertility therapies or when there are concerns about the health of a pregnancy.
A blighted ovum, possible miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, or underestimated gestational age may be suspected if your beta-hCG levels are lower than predicted and do not rise. Another test will probably be done in a few days if your hCG levels are lower than predicted during your pregnancy to determine whether levels are rising or not.
